Episode 3: Twenty Years Ago Next Year.

Previous Episode | Next Episode
Hello campers it's time for another trivial episode of Kirk's Knook © . And what is today's topic? Good question Junior, I don't know I just make these things up as I go along. It's called improvization, you know like the stuff they do on "Who's Line is it Anyway?". The Original is much better than the Drew Carey version even though Ryan Styles appears in 99% of all the episodes of both versions. This episode is not going to get into that show, maybe another time.

OK so just what is this weeks episode about? The Redskins Loosing again? NO! The NHL hiring ex-NBA stars and keeping them benched? NO! Monty Python and Spam®? AAAAHHH. NO, maybe next time. No, this weeks episode is about Seinfeld and his Yadda, Yadda, Yadda. (YEA Right!)

A few days ago it dawned on me that next year 2003 is the 20th anniversary of the CD (Compact Disc)! That means people who turn 20 next year have probably Never known what it's like to get a brand new Record (Vinyl that is). Depending on where they live they have probably ALWAYS had a VCR in their home. Anyway back to the CD thing. Ask people how many CDs they have and you get typical answers of 50-100 or more. Twenty years ago if you asked people how many record albums they had, the answers were usually something like 20-30. Some of us had a few more, but then some people tend to go to the extremes. When CDs first came out, only Classical music was released at first. I believe the first record company to start producing CDs was Columbia. Now the first Popular Rock/Pop Artist to have their records released on CD was (drum roll please) Billy Joel! I believe the first one was "The Nylon Curtain" followed by the rest of Billy's catalog up to that point. I don't remember the rest that came out but I do recall that I started getting CDs before I even had a CD player. I knew I was going to get one sometime but didn't know when, and didn't want to miss out on some titles. I had about 10-12 CDs by the time I finally got a player. Amongst those first few CD's were PAT BENATAR - "Crimes of Passion" and "Benatar Live", ROGER WATERS "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" (with original uncensored cover which I still have) and probably a BILLY JOEL "Glass Houses" or"An Innocent Man", some JETHRO TULL "Aqualung" and An ALAN PARSONS PROJECT or two and maybe a KATE BUSH. It was 1986 when I got that first player which I named "Ed" because that was what the display said when the disc finished playing. I still own "Ed" and it still works, although I tend to listen to CD's now on either my boombox player or in my car. I rarely listen to records anymore, maybe I should sell some of that vinyl on Ebay and some VHS tapes that I've got the DVD of.

See Ya! Next Week,

Kirk
