Good Old School Daze!

www.That70sShow.com

I'm not quite sure why I've decided to make this section. It features some stories I wrote for English Classes during my school days at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. One of those online alumni organizations has set up a database Here. I suppose anybody can visit, but only registered alumni can fully interact with and retrieve information from it.

Anyway here on my "School Daze!" page, these stories/paper assignments were written in my 11th Grade English Class (School Year 1981-1982) Taught by Mr. Wesley Walker. These particular papers I kept mostly because I liked the subject matter, but also because they recieved good grades. During my High School years my grade point average was somewhere in the mid "C" range. In the official class ranking I was in the very middle of the class.

After the title link for each paper, I have given a brief discription of what I (many years later) recall as being the assignment of that particular paper. These are easy reads folks because when I was in school I wrote very short papers. The longest of these papers was only 2 and 1/2 handwritten pages long.

Junior Year
(Fall 1981 - Spring 1982)

  1. Flash Timack
  2. Needs?
  3. Point of View
  4. Time!
Flash Timack - Written on 02 MAY 1982 this paper recieved a grade of C+ (78) with a "Very Clever!" comment at the end. It had several spelling errors. I don't recall what the assignment actually was. I saved this one because I wanted to write a story using a character I first created as a drawing which then lead me to a story idea. I haven't written a full story about good old Flash, but I still plan to someday.
Needs? - This is chronologically the first school paper I have saved from my Junior Year of High School. Written on 12 OCT 1981 It received an A - 90 with some spelling and grammar errors plus a "Weak conclusion" comment. Most of my writings have Weak conclusions. The assignment was to write about what you would do if all of your needs (financial, physical, etc...) were met or solved. I think part of the assignment was to select certian time periods or possibly jump by certain lengths of time, for example every five years, or every ten years; and predict what you would be doing during those times.
Point of View - This one I just don't know what was going on in my mind at the time. Written on 14 APRIL 1982 this paper received an A - 95 with a "Good Job" comment. I kept it mostly for the grade (possibly the highest graded English paper I ever got.) The assignment was to write a paper in the first person point of view. It possibly had to be a famous person or in this case an infamous person. It shows just how truely strange I could be in my teenage years. Some would say I haven't lost my strangeness.
Time! - Written on 21 APRIL 1982 this paper received an A -90 with a note at the end of the first paragraph to "Expand". I think the assignment was to explain the concept of time as used in Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. By my use of examples from other works I guess we also had to include other theories to back up our explanation.

For my short lived college days in the mid 1980's (1983 - 1986) I went to Salem College in West Virginia now known as Salem International University. At one point in the early 1990's it was bought by the Japanese, along with a couple of other small Colleges with financial problems, for a Student Exchange program and school improvement. When I was there I majored in Broadcasting and then switched during my last semester or two to communications. My entire time there I worked as a DJ at their school operated radio station WITB 91.1 FM. Since it was the Mid-1980's they hadn't upgraded to CDs yet, so I spun real "vinyl" records not plastic CDs or computer chips. I don't think the radio station is around anymore. If it's not, I'd like to try to find a way to get it back someday.
