THE WRITER
A Story (In Progress)
By KIRK ANDERSEN

The midnight oil was beginning to burn. The tired old man sat at his desk, desperately trying to crank out a new story. His eyes were glazed over and tired, his hair was disheveled and uncombed. He appeared to be a man of nearly one hundred, but his years only numbered forty-two. He loved his story writing craft but had very little talent.

All of his manuscripts would be returned, all of his ideas were just worn out rewrites. Nothing he could think of turned out to be original, he would make a perfect Hollywood screenplay writer on that score. That is everything except his final work. It was a masterpiece, the kind of story that gets retold and imitated. A story that would at a later time be converted into a movie or a television show, and remade twenty years later.

This man's name was Jonathan Anthony Zimmonfitz. His success began when he started using his initials, instead of his name. For some reason J A Z Z had more appeal than J A Zimmonfitz or Jonathan A Zimmonfitz, well you get the picture. But this is not his story, its a story about him. Well OK! it is his story, but he didn't write it, or maybe he did.

More out of frustration rather than fatigue Jon ripped the sheet of paper out of his typewriter, an old fashioned manual model from the 19th Century. He has never used an electric typewriter or computer for his works, he feels that they don't allow their users to be creative. If he had been born some fifty years before the invention of the typewriter he would be using a quill pen. Some of his critics think that maybe he should stick to cave wall painting.

He then went to bed, being careful not to disturb his sleeping wife Tina. She was the model's model, although she was a librarian and barely 30. She hoped to one day have kids, but she likes the peace and quiet she gets at work.

Jon barely got any sleep that night, he tossed and turned almost constantly. Several times his restlessness would stir Tina, however, she stayed asleep though it all. This made Jon think that she could sleep through a nuclear explosion, but he was intelligent enough to know that she would be horribly burned or vaporized by such a blast, depending on how close she was to ground zero.

Story Origin/Inspiration: This unfinished story of mine is about an unpublished writer and his final work, which will become his only published work. Started in 1995 it has a pretty bizarre ending, plus some of the thoughts aren't properly linked together.
